Launching the Delta State Security Trust Fund held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Governor Sheriff Oborovwori stated that security is not the sole responsibility of Government but it is evebody’s business.
Speaking at the ceremony, Oborovwori explained that without adequate security in the state, development cannot thrive.
He said “Business cannot operate freely, and investors will be reluctant to commit their resources.This Trust Fund represents our shared commitment to peace public safety and sustainable growth”.
The Governor further disclosed that peace and security are better sustained when all Deltans especially women and youths have opportunities to participate in economic growth of the State, stressing that contributions from the dignitaries are not just donations but are investments in peace, stability and economic prosperity.
Also, Governor Sheriff Oborovwori noted that 0.5 percent of the Delta State’s Internally Generated Revenue(IGR), is already allocated monthly to the Security Trust Fund.
The Governor pointed that his government has rebranded operation Delta Hawk as operation Delta Sweep as a joint taskforce including the Army, Navy, Air force, Police, DSS and Civil Defence Corps.
The synergy among these law enforcement agencies had yielded results which includes recovery of a cache of arms and ammunition from criminal elements, Oborovwori said.
Inorder to strengthen security in the state,
Governor Sheriff Oborovwori announced that there will be empowerment programmes, agricultural initiates and massive infrastructural renewal. These will address unemployment and youth restiveness by creating thousands of jobs for them.
The Governor promised to transparently and Judiciously utilized the funds realized from the Launching of the Security Trust according to the law. The Governor also appealed for support from corporate organizations, Private Sector and individuals.
According to Oborovwori the funds would be directed in acquiring modern surveillance equipment, operational vehicles, and communication gadgets as well as supporting training and retraining of security personnel and community vigilante groups across the 25 Local Government Areas of Delta State .
He stated that the Security Trust Fund which was established by law in 2013, was designed as a collaborative platform for mobilizing resources from private sector to complement government investment in Security.
Dignitaries from different walks of life were in attendance including: Captain of Industries, Security Chiefs, Community leaders and top government functionaries.
